Jayanth Panyam, PhD, is dean and professor of pharmaceutics at the University of Washington School of Pharmacy. He joined UW in 2023 with a strong commitment to student success, research excellence, and the essential role pharmacy plays in improving health.
Before coming to UW, Panyam served as dean of the Temple University School of Pharmacy and, earlier, as head of the Department of Pharmaceutics at the University of Minnesota. Across these leadership roles, he has built a record of advancing academic programs, fostering collaboration and supporting innovation at major public research universities.
Trained as a pharmacist and pharmaceutical scientist, Panyam earned his bachelor’s degree in pharmacy from The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University in India, his master’s degree in pharmaceutics from Banaras Hindu University and his PhD in pharmaceutical sciences from the University of Nebraska Medical Center. His research has focused on drug delivery, nanomedicine, cancer therapeutics and immunotherapy, and he has authored or co-authored nearly 100 peer-reviewed publications. His work has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, the U.S. Department of Defense, regional and national foundations, and industry partners.
Panyam has also served in national leadership roles, including as chair of a National Institutes of Health study section. His honors include fellowships from the American Heart Association, the Thomas Jefferson Ingenuity Award from the University of Nebraska Medical Center and the Ralph Wilson Award from the Ralph C. Wilson Foundation.
At UW, he is helping lead the School’s next chapter while building on its longstanding strengths in education, research and public impact.
