General Duties/Description:  PHRMCY 501, 502, and 514 are core courses for UW Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) first year (PY1) students. The PharmD curriculum is a four-year curriculum comprised of coursework in chemistry, pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, therapeutics, law, patient care, and population health. There are approximately 100 PharmD students in this PY1 cohort.

PHRMCY 501 and 502 are courses that aim to provide a foundation in the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to be an effective patient-centered pharmacist provider. Content is designed to facilitate the development of a student’s professional identity and leadership abilities. The course masters are Drs. Jenny Bacci and Rena Gosser. PHRMCY 501 is during the fall quarter on Monday afternoons (1:00 – 3:50 pm). PHRMCY 502 is during the winter quarter on Monday mornings (9:30 – 11:20 am) with limited special sessions on Friday afternoons.

PHRMCY 514 is a course that teaches students how to read and understand study reports published in the medical literature. The course focuses on the fundamentals of the major study designs and also covers some of the statistical tests used in those designs. A basic course in statistics is a pre-requisite for entry into Pharmacy School. The course master is Dr. Terri O’Sullivan. PHRMCY 514 is during the spring quarter on Thursday mornings (9:30 – 11:20 am).

Major TA responsibilities for PHRMCY 501 and 502 include:

  • Total work hours per week = 20 hours
  • Support course masters in grading student assignments and providing feedback (mostly on UW Canvas)
  • Managing course website as needed
  • Triaging student email communication as needed
  • Overseeing office hours and student makeups as needed
  • Attending class sessions
  • Proctoring assessments as needed

Major TA responsibilities for PHRMCY 514 include:

  • Total work hours per week = 20 hours
  • Creating and reviewing a short pre-class assignment each week
  • Creating and reviewing the post-class quiz for each week
  • Helping draft questions for two midterms and one final exam
  • Helping support the Canvas learning management system
  • Attending each lecture
  • Holding one TA office hour weekly
  • Assisting the course lead in other miscellaneous duties

Requirements:  Current Masters or PhD student with good communication skills. Desired – Health Sciences Graduate student.

Salary: Salary is commensurate with academic standing, qualifications, and experience. This position is eligible for a full tuition waiver and all benefits of UAW Academic Student Employees. This position is paid at the Department of Pharmacy Regular (Non-Variable) rate (see salary charts here).

General Duties/Course Description:  Pharmacotherapeutics is a 7-course series which is a critical component of the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program curriculum. This course series provides a foundation in knowledge for patient-centered clinical case management. This TA position supports 3 of the courses in this series.  

PHRMCY 536 Fall Quarter | Dr. Shelly Gray 

Provides a foundation in knowledge for patient-centered clinical case management. Includes assessment and pharmacotherapeutic management of issues related to gender-related health and care, reproductive health, geriatrics, rheumatological diseases, and diseases affecting the urological, dermatological and ophthalmic systems. Prerequisite: PHRMCY 535. Offered: A. 

PHRMCY 531 Winter Quarter | Dr. Mary Hebert  

First course in a 7-course series providing a foundation in knowledge for patient-centered clinical case management. Includes introduction to pharmacotherapeutics and special populations, over-the-counter medications and self-care. Offered: W. 

PHRMCY 532 Spring Quarter | Dr. Brian Werth 

Second course in a 7-course series providing a foundation in knowledge for patient-centered clinical case management. Includes assessment and management of drug-related hypersensitivity and various bacterial, fungal, and viral infectious diseases. Prerequisite: PHRMCY 531. Offered: Sp. 

TA Responsibilities Include:  

  • Total work hours per week = 20 hours 
  • Support coursemaster in organizing course material, setting up course website on UW Canvas, managing recordings (if applicable).  
  • Support coursemaster with class-wide communication, including responding to general student inquiries.  
  • Assist with grading. 
  • Managing course website as needed 
  • Overseeing weekly office hours and student makeups as needed 
  • Attending scheduled course sessions  
  • Proctoring assessments as needed 

Requirements: Current Masters or PhD student with good communication and organizational skills. Desired – Health Sciences Graduate student or current graduate student with a PharmD degree.

The Department of Pharmacy is hiring a Graduate Student Teaching Assistant to support two Autumn quarter courses. The combined time commitment for both courses will not exceed 220 hours per quarter (50% FTE).

PHARM 301 is a 3-credit course designed to introduce undergraduates to a broad range of health care subjects ranging from medication-related topics, drug development and effectiveness to non-pharmacological evidence-based health practices. In addition to promoting personal health, the course aims to help students develop an understanding of US and global health issues, learn and evaluate trends around personalized medicine, and provide an opportunity to learn about the role of the pharmacists and other providers in health care. The course instructors are Profs. H. Steve White and Michelle Guignet. See course details in MyPlan.

PHARM 301 TA Responsibilities:

The TA for this course serves largely as a coordinator and facilitator responsible for such things as:

  • Total work hours per week = 10 hours or 110 hours per quarter
  • Available to attend class for Autumn Quarter (M, W, F, 3:30 – 4:20 pm).
  • Send weekly reminders for upcoming guest speakers, gather presentation materials, and facilitate active learning activities
  • Post lecture notes and other course materials to UW Canvas
  • Support course master with designing, publishing, and grading weekly assignments.
  • Assist with course communication, including responding to student inquiries in-person and via email.
  • Support course master in grading mid-term and final assignments.

PHRMCY 515 is 3-credit course for third year PharmD students cover two key areas: 1) Pharmacy management and 2) Advanced Healthcare and Society topics including population health, health disparities, population health management, and health technology assessment. The first section of the course provides an overview of the concept of population health including the factors that contribute to health, population health metrics, health disparities research, and the pharmacist’s role in population health and population health management. The second section of the course introduces important pharmacy management concepts for pharmacists.  These topics include management of human capital, program development and reassessment, drug pricing, specialty pharmacy, and pharmacy financial management.  The course instructor is Professor Josh Carlson.

PHRMCY 515 TA Responsibilities:

  • Total work hours per week = 10 hours or 110 hours per quarter.
  • Available to attend class for Autumn Quarter (Thursday, 9:30 – 12:20 pm).
  • Help facilitate small group discussion topics during class
  • Grade weekly homework assignments
  • Help prepare and grade midterm exams
  • Grade final projects
  • Help manage scheduling and class communications

Requirements: Current Masters or PhD student. We are seeking an organized, detail-oriented person, with excellent communication and interpersonal skills. The successful candidate will bring a strong background in pharmaceutical sciences or allied health professions. Experience with UW Canvas system is a plus.
