Preeclampsia Study

Do you have a history of preeclampsia?Pregnant_woman

University of Washington researchers in the Departments of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Pharmacy are seeking women with a history of preeclampsia to participate in a research study.

Women with a history of prior preeclampsia are at higher risk for preeclampsia in later pregnancies, and this study will evaluate the effects of an investigational medication that may be useful in preventing preeclampsia on chemicals in the blood that are associated with preeclampsia, the safety of the medication, and how the body handles and responds to the medication during pregnancy.

This is an FDA-approved medication for the treatment of high cholesterol, as well as to decrease the risk of heart attack and stroke. In this study, the medication is investigational because it has not been approved for the prevention of preeclampsia.

We are seeking women who:

  • Are pregnant
  • Are 18-50 years of age
  • Have had preeclampsia requiring delivery at 34 weeks or earlier in either of the last two pregnancies

Study involvement includes:

  • Visits every 1 to 4 weeks during pregnancy
  • Three 24-hour visits at the University of Washington Medical Center (two during pregnancy and one 4-6 months after delivery)
  • Blood and urine samples as well as physical exams
  • Up to $1000 in compensation
  • Free parking on study days
