This week’s Legislative Day in Olympia, Washington, was a strong example of what’s possible when students, faculty, alumni, and professional partners come together in shared purpose. In partnership with the Washington State Pharmacy Association, the UW School of Pharmacy community showed up in record numbers to engage directly with state lawmakers.
In total, 115 pharmacy students and 20 pharmacists—including six faculty members and several alumni—participated in 60 meetings with Washington State legislators. Conversations focused on pharmacist prescriptive authority and educating lawmakers on how policy can improve patient access to care while helping address healthcare affordability across the state. Student participation reached an all-time high.
Several factors contributed to the day’s success: legislation that resonated deeply with students’ training and future roles, and—most importantly—the leadership of a dedicated, well-prepared group of student leaders who helped guide and organize their peers. Legislative Day gives students a meaningful opportunity to represent the School and the profession while developing practical skills in advocacy, leadership, and state health policy.
A special thank you to everyone who helped make the day productive and impactful, including Walgreens and QFC for their support of our students’ participation.
