CHOICE Fellows Contribute to Pediatric Dermatology Research

Kevin Li, PharmD, MS, and Jonathan Luong, PharmD, MS, collaborated with CHOICE Emeritus Professor Beth Devine on a new systematic literature review and network meta-analysis examining biologic treatments for adolescents with moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis. Their article, “Biologic Treatments in Adolescents With Moderate-to-Severe Atopic Dermatitis: A Systematic Literature Review and Network Meta-analysis,” was published in Annals of Pharmacotherapy in 2026.

Network meta-analysis is not traditionally part of the PharmD curriculum, but it is a core method in Health Economics and Outcomes Research. As they prepared to begin their respective MS degrees in HEOR with The CHOICE Institute, Li, a UW-Sanofi fellow from 2024–2026, and Luong, a UW-Genentech fellow from 2025–2027, recognized the value of building this skill for their future professional work.

Li first identified a gap in the literature comparing biologic therapies for moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis in adolescents and launched the indirect treatment comparison study. After completing his PharmD, Luong joined the team and helped see the manuscript through to publication. Emily Duffy, a pediatric dermatologist at Seattle Children’s Hospital, contributed the clinical perspective.

In addition to making a valuable contribution to the pediatric literature on biologic therapies for atopic dermatitis, their work offers pharmacists a useful example of how network meta-analysis can illuminate important comparative treatment questions.

“It was a true pleasure collaborating on this important project with our world-class PharmD and graduate students, Kevin and Jonathan,” Devine said.
