Program: Doctor of Pharmacy

I chose UW because of its excellent teaching team, their emphasis on clinical pharmacy, as well as Washington’s progressive pharmacy laws.
My interest in pharmacy began during my undergraduate studies, particularly when taking microbiology and organic chemistry. I was fascinated by how microorganisms cause disease and how medications are designed to target them. Learning about drug structures and how small changes in functional groups can alter their mechanisms of action interested me, and I wanted to learn more about this topic.
I also worked as a pharmacy technician before pharmacy school, where I learned that I enjoy interacting with patients and playing a direct role in their healthcare. Being able to use my knowledge to support others and make a difference in my community was very fulfilling. That experience reinforced my desire to further my education and pursue a career where I could continue helping others.
We participated in legislative day where we traveled to Olympia and met with legislators to discuss a pharmacy bill. It felt like we were making actual progress and spreading important knowledge about our profession.
I’ve loved joining school organizations and even being on the board of a few of them. I was the Mental Health Director for one student organization and got to plan various events. These included pharmacist panels and fun events where students could come play games or craft after a stressful exam.
I thought that since I chose pharmacy, I needed to be good at and love every part of it. I would lose motivation when I wasn’t good at a particular topic and felt like I didn’t deserve to be here. However, after talking to practicing pharmacists that I look up to, I realized that everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses. Finding what you are passionate about and want to focus on is most important. We need pharmacists in every part of the field and it’s important to find how you want to make an impact.
I went to the high school where High School Musical was filmed.
