Some highlights from nominations include:
“In addition to constructive feedback, she also always pointed out when I was doing something well, which I myself did not always realize. She made me think a lot about what my strengths are, and who I want to be as a pharmacist. Pharmacy Clinical Services Manager
(EvergreenHealth)

He takes the time to think ofunique experiences his site has to offer and makesarrangements for the student to experience them. He shares what inspires and motivates him to go into work each day and why he chose a public service profession.

Some nominating comments include:
“2020 has been a very challenging year for pharmacy managers in the greater Seattle area due to strict COVID-related protocols that significantly affect pharmacy workflow, in addition to an increased number of UW IPPE students completing institutional rotations throughout this summer as a result of the new curriculum. I think that Chhang has taken these challenges in stride and does a wonderful job prioritizing students and ensuring they are provided ample learning opportunities and have an individualized clinical experience at EvergreenHealth in Kirkland. I feel very blessed to have had the opportunity to work with Chhang and the pharmacy team at EvergreenHealth.”

Louisa Dubois, PharmD

She engages and motivates the students by asking thoughtful and critical thinking questions. She also makes sure there is “free learning time” and discussion through the day.

Some highlights from nominations include:
“She made the environment one of learning. Always open to questions and ready to teach. 2021 Wednesdays-in-Practice (WIP) Preceptor of the Year

Robert Cockrell, PharmD

Director of Pharmacy
(Cascade Valley Hospital)

Val Wilkins, RPh, MS, MBA, MHIHIM

Clinical Pharmacist
(Cascade Valley Hospital)

Robert shared about how they engage the students by having them attend the multidisciplinary rounds. He makes sure the students come up with at least one thing that was discussed during rounds that they haven’t yet studied. They then discuss these subjects after rounds and talk about how they impact the patient, how it might affect quality of life, how it might affect the patient’s mental or physical status, and how it might affect their lives.

Val teaches the students that sometimes asking the right question is as important as having the correct answer, and that turning life-long learning into a habit is both fun and professionally rewarding. Her tips for precepting early learners:

  • Involve your students in daily workflow – have them help you review new patients and answer questions from the team
  • Plan ahead – have meaningful tasks or activities in reserve that they can complete with minimal supervision in case you are pulled away by urgent situations
  • Coordinate with your fellow preceptor(s), it’s a great way to come up with new student activities or assignments on days you might not feel creative

Some highlights from nominations include:
“I felt very lucky to be under their guidance and learn so much insight from what they do on a daily basis. They posed questions that made me reflect, research, and really think as to how I would approach a patient profile and what I should look up next. I felt they truly went over and beyond the tasks asked by the school because they genuinely cared to give us insight on the importance of their job.”

“My preceptors are motivational and positive leaders. Their positive energy is what made me want to get out of bed for the past two weeks and be excited from the moment I walked in the door until the moment we leave. They have left the effect on my partner and I to want to proactively learn and be a part of their pharmacy environment.”

Their story and recognition was shared in a recent Skagit Regional Health blog post.

Certificate of Merit in Precepting

Each year, our Experiential Education team has the pleasure of identifying preceptors who have demonstrated excellence in precepting through our annual preceptor review process.

This review process considers preceptor accomplishment in the following areas:

  1. Active participation (as measured by the number of students precepted)
  2. Quality of precepting (based on student evaluations of the preceptor)
  3. Continuing professional development (e.g., completion of preceptor development CE programs and preceptor self-assessment on the UW SOP Preceptor Profile)
  4. Sustained and significant contributions to the School and profession

This year we reviewed nearly 600 preceptors (primary and secondary preceptors who precepted at least 1 student this past year). We are pleased to recognize these exemplary preceptors as recipients of the 2021 Certificate of Merit in Precepting for their dedication and commitment to pharmacy education.
