Becoming a Preceptor

Becoming a preceptor for UW School of Pharmacy students

There are a few steps involved in becoming a Qualified Preceptor for our Experiential Education program:

  1. If you are a pharmacist in Washington State, you will need to have completed the requirements for licensing as a Pharmacy Preceptor. If you are a pharmacist from another state, then you will need to have completed that state’s requirements for being a preceptor.
  2. To set up a new IPPE site, contact the Experiential Education Coordinator & Advisor. To set up a new APPE site, contact the Director of Operations.
  3. Once we hear from you, we follow up with you directly. At that time we will also discuss with you setting up an affiliation agreement, if one is not already in place for your site.
  4. Complete a Preceptor Orientation to our program (ACPE-accredited CE program for 1.0 contact hour) available on the Preceptor Portal. Our office will provide you with a Preceptor PIN to log in to the Preceptor Portal to complete the orientation. Successful completion includes review of the video module and completion of the post-test evaluation. Orientation objectives include:
    1. Provide an overview of the UW SOP didactic and experiential education curriculum
    2. Describe how preceptors can structure learning to develop a successful student learning experience
    3. Distinguish the role and expectations of the preceptor
    4. Provide Tips for giving feedback to students
    5. Navigate student evaluation system and outline key considerations for performance assessment

Once you have completed these steps, we will work with you to finish setting up your site.
