University Services

Housing

The University maintains student housing near campus for married couples or registered, same-sex domestic partners and students with children,. Also available are a large number of privately owned apartments in the surrounding residential areas. Rental costs in Seattle for a one bedroom apartment start at about $675 per month.

Student Facilities

Students in the Department of Pharmacy have access to excellent facilities including:

  • The University of Washington Health Sciences Library, with over 262,000 volumes and 3,700 serials and on-line bibliographic database services
  • Departmental library containing reference materials and over 70 serial publications
  • State-of-the-art computing facilities
  • Office space and individual computers

Transportation

The University provides students with the “U-Pass” which provides unlimited bus transportation throughout the city. Parking is available at nearby lots, but a car is not essential for convenient transportation. The University is also served by special bicycle lanes and the Burke Gilman Trail.

Health Services

Health care is available at a clinic located near the center of campus, as well as at the medical and dental schools and University Hospital. A health insurance plan is available to regularly enrolled University students and their dependents. Students holding regular teaching or research assistantships are covered on the standard student insurance plan and have the option of insuring their spouse and/or children under this plan. All international students are required to have a health insurance policy in force while registered at the University. This requirement can be satisfied either by purchasing the student health and accident coverage or showing proof of equivalent coverage. Students cannot register unless the insurance requirement is fulfilled by the tuition due date.

Athletic Activities

Sports activities including swimming, racquet sports, basketball, softball, and weight lifting are available at campus facilities. The Husky Union Building has facilities for indoor sports, such as table tennis, bowling, and pool. A sailing club takes advantage of the two surrounding lakes, and boats, kayaks, and canoes may be rented. The 296 acre arboretum provides a lovely place for walking and jogging. Within an hour’s drive are several major ski areas. State and national parks at Mount Rainier and the Olympic Peninsula, and in the Cascade mountains, San Juan Islands, and the Puget Sound shoreline present wonderful opportunities for camping, hiking and recreation. Seattle also offers professional basketball, baseball, football, soccer, and hockey teams for those who prefer to participate as spectators.
