What are the benefits of joining UWRAPT?

The primary benefit of joining UWRAPT is to actively participate in answering drug transporters related research questions that members face in drug development. Specifically, the UWRAPT members will have:

  1. Access to all the raw data as soon as they are collected, which is commonly 1 year prior to their publication
  2. Input (through votes) on the direction of UWRAPT research in the following year (see below)
  3. Transporter expression quantified in member cell/tissue samples (n= 20 per year)
  4. Access to UWRAPT protocols for quantification of transporter protein expression
  5. A forum to discuss transporter-related issues with other UWRAPT members

How is the scope of UWRAPT decided?

The annual research scope of UWRAPT is decided in the previous year by a vote of the Research Advisory Board constituted of UWRAPT members and Dr. Unadkat. Full members and Dr. Unadkat have two votes each while associate members have one vote each.

Why are transporter quantification data important?

Transporter expression and related interindividual variability is important information to scale in vitro transport data to that in vivo.

How is the expression of transporter proteins quantified?

Drug transporter proteins are digested using trypsin to generate unique peptides. These unique (signature) peptides are used as surrogates for protein quantification. Peptides are separated using liquid chromatography (LC) and detected using multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) in a triple quandrupole mass spectrometry (MS).

How can we use transporter data?

The information on transporter expression data in tissues, in addition to in vitro transporter activity data, can be used to quantitatively predict in vivo drug disposition including inter-individual variability and drug-drug interactions.

What are the scientific contributions of the members?

UWRAPT industry members contribute in research by providing their input in the following three areas:

  1. Research directions and interpretation of the generated data
  2. Writing manuscripts
  3. Sharing resources (e.g., hepatocytes, cell lines, tissues) for research
