Graduate Recognition Ceremony Instructions for Friday, June 14, 2013

1:00PM: Required Rehearsal – Meany Hall

  • Prior to rehearsal, review the line up to determine your place in line (pdf file coming soon)
  • Students must wear their cap/tam and gown graduation attire (this includes your hood), meet outside in lower Red Square in front of the main Meany entrance stairs at 1:00 to begin the line up in the proper order. The rehearsal procession will begin to walk into Meany Hall at 1:30 sharp.
  • Please give the staff your full attention throughout this process. It is extremely important that you arrive on time. Please remember, the success of your graduate recognition ceremony depends on each of your participation in this rehearsal!
Graduation Gown Instructions
Since there is no dressing room available, students will either need to arrange to leave their personal belongings with someone, or simply, “travel light.” In past years, some students have opted to wear a small waist pack. You are advised to bring hairpins to secure your caps to your head if needed. Safety pins have also been useful. If the weather is warm, you are encouraged to wear lightweight clothing underneath. Regarding the hoods, it is more comfortable to wear something with buttons on your front, neck area (or have a safety pin), so that the hood can be attached to the button or pin, to avoid the hood tugging at your neck. For directions on how to wear your hood, please click here.

2:30 Class Photo(s) by the Photographer Company, CSI
Following the rehearsal, return to Red Square for class photos, starting with the Entry Level Pharm.D.’s, followed by the Departmental M.S. and Ph.D. photos. Students must be in full graduation gown/cap/hood attire.

After these photos have been taken, you are free to mingle and move about until 3:00 when line-up for the final procession begins. If you mingle with your guests, you should inform them that if they want to get a good seat, they may want to enter soon after the Meany doors open at 2:30, since Meany fills up fast.

2:30 Parking and Meany Doors Open to the Public
Guests are required to present a pre-paid parking pass per car to the Central Plaza Garage gate attendant. Students should order parking permits through the Commencement registration/order form. Admission tickets are required to enter Meany, and seating is complimentary.

Graduates who request special accommodation seating for their guests (on the questionnaire), can notify their guests that seats will be sectioned-off and reserved for them using the student’s last name. If a slide show is being prepared by the PharmD's, this presentation will be shown at 2:45 to the audience. Whoever is the person in charge, should contact Cher by April at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for more details.

3:00 Final Line-up for the Graduate Recognition ceremony
The final line-up will begin at 3:00 p.m. This will be a little different than the rehearsal, since the faculty will also be meeting here for line-up at this time, with students lining-up behind the faculty, so make room for the faculty in front of your line.

3:30 Ceremony Begins
The procession line will start entering Meany promptly at 3:30. It is important that all students are in their correct order in line. Student speakers will be instructed to sit in the first row for convenience to the podium. Once speakers are finished with their speech, they may return to their assigned seat.

Each student will take off their hood when seated and when it is time to walk up the stairs to the stage, each student will give their hood to the faculty member that is hooding you (past years this has been Drs. Murphy and Kedzierski ) Once you are hooded, Drs. O'Sullivan, Weber or Sullivan will announce your name. At this time, you will walk across the stage to shake hands with Dean Baillie. The Ph.D. students may shake hands with their advisor first after being hooded, then shake hands with Dean Baillie.

VERY IMPORTANT TO RELAY THIS MESSAGE TO YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY
Photos/Videotaping during the Ceremony
We will have a photographer at the Graduate Recognition Ceremony. The photographer is planning to take pictures of each graduate. The photographer may need to move between both sides of the stage from the audience floor, and therefore it will not be possible for friends or relatives to take pictures in this area.

If friends or family would like to take their own pictures they are allowed to walk down the left aisle facing the stage, and take their picture from the floor level, as their graduate is walking towards them across the stage. Please tell your family and/or friends who are photographing, that this is a temporary spot, and they should only stay in this area long enough to take their graduate’s picture. After this, they must return to their original seats, so as to allow room for others to take pictures.

Note: Fire code restrictions prohibit people standing for any length of time in the aisles or stage area, since these areas must be kept clear. If anyone lingers more than two-three minutes they will be asked to return to their seats. It is okay for guests to videotape the entire ceremony from their seats. For those wanting to pursue this option, it is advisable that they arrive early to find the best seat for this purpose. In addition, those using video cameras are also asked to use the available light only and not to use any extra lighting, so as not to blind those on stage, particularly those who need to read notes. All video or photographing must be handheld.
Additional Note: No tripods, monos or balloons are allowed in Meany Theater.

Following Graduate Recognition Ceremony
Please join your classmates, faculty, and friends for cookies, coffee and punch in the West Lobby of Meany Theater, following graduation. This is an opportunity for your guests to meet everyone with whom you have spent these past years. Our best wishes to you on this special day and your future!
