Mission and Vision

The Pharmacy faculty is responsible for teaching the practice-related portion of the professional pharmacy or PharmD curriculum. We have an established graduate program in pharmaceutical outcomes research and policy (PORPP). The department supports general and specialized pharmacy residencies, and research fellowships in select areas of pharmacotherapeutics.

The Department of Pharmacy at the University of Washington is a recognized leader or has demonstrated strengths in the following areas.

Innovative training programs in institutional and community pharmacy practice, notably:

  • Geriatric Pharmacy including the Certificate Program in Geriatric Pharmacy Practice
  • Pioneering effort in the development of community pharmacy residency
  • Training in community-based health screening and state-wide certification in provision of immunization and emergency contraception
  • Pharmacy Management Certificate Program (in collaboration with the School of Business)
  • Pharmacy ownership/entrepreneurship workshops and coursework
  • Biomedical Regulatory Affairs Certificate Program through UW Extension
  • The innovative “Fix-the-Law” project in teaching pharmacy students that promotes student participation in the improvement and reform of state pharmacy laws

Graduate training and research in pharmaceutical outcomes and policy, with specific recognition as:

  • A leading center for the economic evaluation of pharmacogenetic and other diagnostic innovations, as well as related policy issues
  • A major participant in federal and regional government-funded studies of medication prescribing errors, and in developing solutions through health systems technology enhancement
  • An influential voice in pharmaceutical risk-benefit analysis in both industry and regulatory sectors

  • Clinical Pharmacokinetics
  • Immunosuppressive drug therapy
  • Maternal-fetal pharmacology
  • Women’s health and medications
  • Drug-drug and herb-drug interactions
  • Anticancer drugs and pain medications
  • Antiepileptic drug therapy
  • Medication safety in geriatrics patients
